"BIZNES meble.pl" international 1/2018

interview X design international edition 1/2018 [ BIZNES meble.pl 75 holder, she participated in four editions of PE-P during her undergraduate and grad- uate studies. She finished with few imple- mented projects, and at the same time she did two diplomas – BA and MA – under my guidance, running independent pro- jects also based on cooperation with the industry. This shows the model of studies possible to be implemented at our univer- sity, compiled by Joanna Lisiecka, similar to the program of the design university that bases education on permanent co- operation with external companies and institutions, offered by e.g. Konstfack in Stockholm. What do you, as an active designer, put the greatest emphasis on in educating future designers? What do young ap- prentices of design have to be aware of? Systematic work, self-discipline and good organization of work bring results. Sometimes we have to wait a long time, but I try to pass these standards to stu- dents during our work. I focus on team- work. Our generation has been educated to be individual. And the designer al- ways cooperates with various specialists which significantly widens his spectrum of work and creation. The time spent with the students during the implemen- tation of particular stages of the project puts us in a different situations. We do not work only in the university labora- tory, we travel together, participate in consultations, trainings and workshops during the prototyping process. We spend a lot of time together, definitely more than it is shown in the study sched- ule, so it happens that fatigue and doubt also come. My role is to support, moti- vate, and point out the possibilities for students. They are often very young peo- ple and there are situations that require unconventional intervention. One of the effects of the sixteen editions of the Education and Design Program is 95% of graduates working in the pro- fession. Do you follow the development of their careers? The UAP Careers Office has been col- lecting information about our graduates for many years. Most of themwork in the profession. I have personal contact with many PE-P graduates. Some of them have been sending me ‘reports’ for years, describing their further development, decisions and successes. We meet sys- tematically exchanging experiences and knowledge. I meet some alumni during postgraduate studies, at conferences or trade fairs. Several of our graduates work at PE-P partners. Schattdecor, which is the only permanent partner of PE-P for 17 years, is a great example of building lasting relationships between UAP and the company. A few of our graduates were or are employed in both Schattde- cor in Tarnowo Podgórne and in Tansau. Through many years the Education and Design Program addressed responsibil- ity for material resources. Will the prob- lem of consumerism be still discussed in the next editions of the Program? This is a very important aspect of our lives, including education, design and production. A very wide and com- plex problem. During each research and design process, extensive consumption appears as a problem, it is defined and solutions are suggested for it, most often associated with conscious minimization. I am convinced that also the large-scale industry has the potential to open up to pro-ecological solutions, respecting natural resources in a broader scope or managing own goods. More and more products convince us that the reuse of materials favours our development. De- signers together with the industry have the opportunity to initiate a new culture of value and skilful use of goods. Yes, I plan to expand the designing area in next PE-P editions based on selected criteria for responsible design. Time will show to what extent the new PE-P part- ners will accept it. The formula of the Education and De- sign Program remained unchanged for years, but PE-P has developed at the same time, depending on the partners. What will be characteristic for 17th edi- tion, what kind of interior will it cover and what effects we can expect during the exhibition within ‘Arena Design’ in March 2018? The project topic of the 17th edition of PE-P is ‘Meeting’ in the context of generations, with emphasis on the func- tions of preparing and eating, relaxing, playing, working and storing. We study, analyse and look for new solutions for the meeting space. During ‘Arena De- sign 2018’, as part of the ‘Meeting’ spe- cial exhibition, we will present furniture designs for meeting space and digital decors for furniture surfaces and kitchen counter tops dedicated to them. Student project groups and representatives of Stolkar, Swiss Krono, Schattdecor and Rehau will present new projects of the 17th edition of PE-P. Thank you for the interview and I wish you many interesting effects of 17th edition. dr hab. Katarzyna Laskowska professor at UAP Coordinator of research and design projects.
